The article "Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler's Shadow" by Laura smith focuses on a girl by the name of Sophie Scholl. Sophie deals with the hardships of contemplating whether or not to follow the Nazis or rebel and try to get her point across about why Hitler is in the wrong. This article also gets into depth on how schools were run and how some of the teachers were dealt with if they rebelled against Hitler. This had all happened because of a group similar to the boy scouts called "Hitler's youth". Hitler's youth focused on making young men into soldiers and making young women into good wives.

Sophie Scholl had a conflict being part of the Hitler Youth because she disagreed with the Nazi party's ideologies and actions. Sophie saw what the nazis were trying to do and saw how bad it was. "Though Sophie knew the correct National Socialistic answer to every question, she soon found herself unwilling to give her teachers the answers they wanted but she felt were wrong."(Paragraph 4) She knows what's right and wants to express herself, but she feels pressured because her teachers don't have the same beliefs as her. Sophie rebelled when a German motto said that all girls should wear braids. "Although a German motto said, "German girls wear braids," dark-haired Sophie wore her hair short."(paragraph 2) By wearing her hair short, she had already shown that she doesn't agree with the rules they are placing on little things. Later on in her life, Sophie handled the conflict she felt over her Nazi beliefs by becoming a member of the non-violent resistance group, the White Rose. She protested and graffitied to try and awaken people who were brainwashed by Hitler. She tried to get her point across in both ways by rebelling about the hair and later on joining a non-violent resistance
