Throughout the story we see Holden that suffers from a lot of illnesses like Post traumatic stress disorder, detachment, agitation, depression, denial, acceptance, sleep deprivation, and loneliness. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder characterized by failure to recover after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. I believe Holden was diagnosed with this disorder after the death of his younger brother Allie. Like any other human being losing a younger sibling is a life changing event especially the way Holden lost his brother. After Holden found out his brother died he was so angry that he punched the windows out of his old summer home and broke his hand. Holden truly believes that school isn't important at all so he doesn't even out and effort to finish his homework or even tries to pass all his classes. According to the letter Holden wrote to Mr.spencer he says "It is all right with me if you flunk me though as I am flunking everything else except English anyway. Respectfully yours, Holden Caulfield". Holden strongly believe he has no future and he doesn't want one anyways, he never wants to grow up. He shows this by flunking most of his classes, getting drunk even though he is underage, and always disagreeing with his parents or teachers that are trying to lead him towards a good adult life. In the novel Mr.Antolini quotes "The mark of an immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of a mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one". And surly Holden takes the quote for granted. Depression is a mental illness in which one simply cannot find the joy in life, where he or she is constantly feeling in a low mood.
