Becoming a Murderer What leads a person to murder? Is it jealousy or the desire for revenge? The book Holes, by Louis Sachar is the story of how a person becomes a murderer. Sachar reveals that love is a strong emotion that can change a person’s life. A fictional character, Katherine Barlow was the only school teacher in the small town of Green Lake, Texas. She was an innocent and beautiful woman who was admired by children and men who wanted more, but only got an education. Katherine Barlow, later known as Kissin’ Kate’s life circumstances created a motive to drive her to pursue the life of an outlaw. The first event that led to Katherine Barlow to becoming Kissin’ Kate the outlaw was the burning of the town’s only schoolhouse, where Katherine taught at. Sam the onion picker would fix the leaking roof, the window that would not open, the door that does not hang straight, her desk that wobbles, and anything else that would have needed to be fixed. Everyone in town was proud of the “new” schoolhouse, except for Katherine. She longed to see Sam again, wishing there was something else that needed to be fixed.
