Hollywood's False Asian Stereotypes What do you think about Asians? Perhaps, people might think of those who generally don't like sports and only study, and who may feel intimidated or only support the main character because the media primarily shows Asian images as just mentioned. People are more familiar with the characteristics depicted in the media, so when they think of Asia, they remind of those images first. In the article, “Asian Characters Are Still Minor or Stereotyped in Film, According to New Study”, by Diep Tran, she discussed how the Asian image seen in Hollywood is related to anti-Asian hate crimes, and that Hollywood's system needs to be improved. Based on Tran, “The study found that stereotypical representation included speaking English with an accent or in a non-English language (playing into the ‘perpetual foreigner’ stereotype), Asian men being portrayed as being emasculated, and Asian women being hypersexualized.” She states that when Asians speak English on screen, they say that by mixing Asian-specific accents to speak English or using other languages, Hollywood is pushing the idea that Asians can never belong here. In addition, Asian men appear very emasculated, unlike men of other races who look robust, and Asian women get far more exaggerated than actual sexism. Among English-speaking Asians, English can be their first language - if they were born here and have an American nationality, etc. Even, some of them may not speak any other language than English, and many of them have a perfect pronunciation that is often completely indistinguishable from what the public thinks of an 'American' English accent. However, Hollywood's distinctive Asian images give the public the impression that they can only speak strong accents in English, and in real life, some American-Asian people often experience a rude situation of 'Speaking English well even though they are foreigners.' Even if Asians are not really born in the U.S. but speak English perfectly without their accents, some are rude people who deliberately pretend not to understand by exploiting their unique accents shown on the screen. Also, with a distinctive accent, Asian men deliberately make them look emasculated even though more people don't look like that, or by adding excessively sexist elements to Asian women, all those making them look like more strangers. It is easier for the public to use them as targets of crime, fueling anti - Asian hate
