The History of The Hollywood Film Industry
Hollywood: perhaps the only place in the world that evokes glamour and show-biz magic. The legend known as Hollywood formed in the 20th century and is a symbol of pure American history and innovation. The birth of the motion picture and movies began in the late 1800’s with “motion toys” made to trick the eye into believing there is a moving picture made from a series of still frames quickly moving such as the thaumatrope. The first true motion picture was created in 1872 by a man named Edward Muybridge who placed twelve cameras on a race track and shot a quick film of a horse galloping in front of the lenses. Aspiring filmmakers were pushing into new territory and exploring into editing, visual flow, and backdrops. One of the most affluent films of that time was The Great Train Robbery created by Edwin S. Porter in 1903.
Later, in 1905 five-cent theatres called Nickelodeons started popping up all across the states. These places offered a easy and inexpensive way for the public to watch movies. Nickelodeons increased the public appeal of film and generated more money for filmmakers, along with the widespread use of World War 1 propaganda. In this way they very much contributed to the film industry’s transition to the 1920’s. After the end of World War 1, United States were in a cultural boom and a new industry center was on the rise: Hollywood, the home of motion pictures in America.
According to urban film legend, the first film made in Hollywood was Cecil DeMille’s The Squaw Man in 1914 when the director decided to shoot in Los Angeles at last minute, but an earlier film by D.W. Griffith, Old California, made in 1910 had been filmed entirely in the small village of Hollywood.
