In May 1943, I was inducted into the National Labor Service (Reichsarbeitsdienst) and was stationed at Bützow. During our RAD days, the Waffen SS and the Regiment Grossdeutschland used to visit our camps to give propaganda speeches and generally try to recruit soldiers. They were especially looking for people who were taller than 5 feet 7 inches. In order to avoid being caught by these organizations, one had to either adopt a firm attitude with them, which was obviously difficult to do, or write to the recruiting offices of other units as volunteers, hoping that you wouldn’t be turned down.
