Luke Roe Mr. Thomson U.S. History 13 November 2017 A Homeless America The great depression caused millions to lose their. in the 1920s and parts of the 1930’s, many people were homeless. During the great depression, many people across the country did not have homes. many people without homes made makeshift shacks out of garbage and rubble.many people without homes rode the rails to new states and some even left the country in hope of a better life. During the Great Depression, factories shut down and this led to Americans becoming homeless so the government created the FHA (Federal Housing Association) to help Americans get homes. People lived in communities of shacks that were made out of garbage called “hoovervilles”. When people started to lose their homes, “The Shanty Towns, known as Hoovervilles, sprang up across the nation during the Great Depression (1929 - 1941). They were built by unemployed impoverished Americans that had been made homeless and had nowhere else to live. By 1932, between one and two million American people were homeless. The Hoovervilles varied in size from just a few shacks clustered together to communities of over 1000 rickety shacks covering acres of unused or public lands. The makeshift shacks were constructed from unwanted materials and lacked basic amenities such as adequate sanitation and clean drinking water” (“shanty town facts”). Thousands of people lived in communities of shacks called Hoovervilles, they were made for garbage and scraps and were very unsanitary, many children chose to leave home. During the depression,“Families were being torn apart because parents were not able feed their children, and dads left their families, and children left their homes to travel across the country.” (Family and Home, impact of the Great Depression).
