The common belief is that the grass is greener on the other side. In this excerpt from “Staying Put: Making A Home in A Restless World” Scott Sanders utilizes an philosophical tone to argue that it is not necessarily true. In his response to Salman Rushdie’s essay, Sanders argues that the better thing is to instead make a place home for a lifetime, and he uses an assortment of rhetorical devices to develop his claim. Stagnation is intolerable, movement is manageable, is a common Western belief. In his essay, Sanders use irony in lines 3-8 to allow the reader to see how he views this conviction.
In her essay "Homeless", Anna Quindlen writes that she means to have a house for her and that with the purpose of making us understand how the lives of homeless people are. She comments as the meaning of having a house changed in the last generations, she explains how you used to live with your family in the same house for many decades and now only people are separated to have their own house for the purpose of having something of their own . In the year 1984, October 1st, two Holy Cross Priests had the mere idea of creating a foundation to help the poor and homeless. By renting a house they started their own idea, by bringing in their first guest and creating something that will forever remain to offer hospitality. Slowly but surely, this organization formed many new members of volunteers to help as well. Not only did the volunteers increase, services were established that this organization offers, and many people from all over the Phoenix area started to send in donations such as clothes, blankets, and medical needs. Andre House of Hospitality is a non-profit organization, and because of this, they rely on “us”, the community, to do our part to help the less unfortunate.

In this essay, the author is painting a picture of what it is actually like to be homeless compared to the typical stereotype. In the opinion of most people, being homeless is, someone that does not work hard and only mooches off other hardworking citizens. According to Simon Wyckoff, in reality, being homeless is a struggle to survive. The homeless have to overcome adversity everyday of their lives and most people do not think twice about what it is like to be without a home. Wykoff states a unique statement at the end of his essay saying, "Though it may seem outlandish, I think you'll find that many homeless people work just as much, or more, than you."
In the passage, Homeless by Anna Quindlen the central idea is our idea of home has changed. First, homes are no longer what they used to be because now they are real estate. Social status has affected the world for hundreds of years, from where you were allowed to go to the bathroom, to if you were allowed to vote. Prior to reading this novel I had never considered why the homeless were homeless. I always just stereotyped them and assumed that they were alcoholics or drug addicts and that it was their own fault that they were on the streets. The idea that there would be any other reasoning for their homelessness never crossed my mind. “I think that maybe sometimes people get the lives they want,” (Walls 256).
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.
You would n ever know by looking at me or talking to me that my family and I have been homeless before. For the kids that have been homeless before it doesn't make you any less worthy, or intelligent than anyone else. There are many things you can do not only to help yourself with the feelings of being embarrassed or ashamed but you can also help others like you, be apart of organizations, and volunteer your time to others that have been in our situation of being homeless so they can feel better and know it ’s okay.
During the recent years homelessness has increased eminently. Although homelessness is not a new phenomenon it has become a huge social issue in today’s society. In urban areas homelessness is visible by the masses but ignored by society’s negative perception. Characterized as unstable individuals, alcoholics and criminals by society, these negative stereotypes have only escalate the issue. Homeless can occur at any stage of life for multitude of factors.
