During the early 20th century, the United States was going through various drastic changes in a short period of time. The United States was swept away by an economic boom in the 1920's that was filled with promises of abundance and prosperity. This was the turn of the Glided Age, which witnesses the growth of tremendous fortunes and industrial capacity amid economic uncertainty and the advent of the modern America. Turning point for the United States because it resulted in becoming a global consumer power. The mass-production and mass-consumption flourished during this time period and as a result, it was the result of the Urbanization if the United States.
Doris’ mother fed the Kansan family who lived across the street from the Lees. When the family arrived in Minnesota with nothing, and after the father stole a 50-pound bag of flour to feed his family, he could not find a job or afford food because, according to Doris, “the mayor had it out for him.” Beyond disapproving of the Kansans, the mayor of Blackduck disapproved of feeding railroad riders. Nevertheless, Irene Lee fed the railroad riders who came to her home looking for food, asking them to chop wood for her before feeding them on her back porch. Once, she gave a man from Kansas long underwear to stay warm.
From our textbook we are able to learn the base information of the depression and migrant workers. As time went on, the unemployment rate increased up to 25%. In “Firing Not Hiring”, it reads “By 1930, millions of people across the country were unemployed” (Hayes). These people were unemployed and could not find a stable job that could produce enough money for them. Many citizens had to come up with ways to earn money for themselves and for their families. Hayes states, “For the next few years men, women, and children were selling five-cent apples on street corner”.
The Great Depression was a time of economic crisis around the world from the time period 1929 to World War II. To help capture the feeling in this period, John Steinbeck published The Grapes of Wrath. The main plot of of the story is about the Joads, a farming family forced from their home sent to search for work in California. Steinbeck includes a series of intercalary chapters to help paint a picture of migrant workers and the challenges they faced. In chapter 9, Steinbeck explores the emotional trials the tenants forced to endure when they are required to leave their homes and their lives, this chapter is an appeal to pathos.
The great depression is an immense tragedy that took millions of people in the United States from work. It marked the beginning of involvement from the government to the country’s economy and also the society as a whole. We still feel and deal with the ramifications from the laws and policies made to get us out of the economic drought and ensure it never happens again. There is a huge contrast between the 1920’s and the 1930’s as the what they call ‘The roaring twenties” was full of prosperity and wealth due to the destruction of Europe and its economy after World War One. The 1920’s were truly crucial for the U.S as it is when it becomes a truly modernized nation.
One of the most world-changing moments in the world at the end of the 1920's was the Great Depression. Although some might have benefited from it, the Great Depression was also the event that caused the economy to become depressed due to many changes in the world. The Great Depression caused extreme poverty, severe number of unemployed people and homelessness. In picture two, it shows how there's a homeless man sitting there with a little baby.
The social issue that I picked is homelessness. Homelessness is a real issue, even if we don’t always see it. Homelessness doesn’t just mean you don’t have a roof over your head, it means you don’t have food, a good education, a healthy lifestyle, or a warm place to sleep every night. Some people don’t think very highly about homeless people, they think that it's their fault that they are where they are in life. Homelessness is going to end up becoming a bigger problem.
Homelessness in New York City has undoubtedly changed tremendously since the 1990’s. In 2015 today it is no secret that there is a huge homelessness crisis in New York City. We see them on most if not every train ride either asking for money, food or in a corner using the rain as a form of shelter. Often time’s people look down upon homeless people and think they all have mental or drug issues or didn't work hard enough to make it on this place where people come to so called have a better life. Although it might be true that these homeless people might acquire these issues it is imperative for us to understand how to go to the positions they are in today.

Millions of people including families ,children, elder, babies , veterans live day after day without water ,food or a roof over their heads. The number of homeless, families with children and elder has considerably over the past decade or so. They are together the fast, growing portion of the homeless population. There are together almost 40% of all people who are homeless.
Homelessness is a product of social inequalities. Karl Marx stated that the capitalist society produces two prominent classes which are in conflict with each other, bourgeoisie and proletariats. The bourgeoisie are the oppressors who own the means of production and the proletariats are the oppressed workers who labor for the bourgeoisie. Capitalism is distinguished not by privilege but instead by individuality of property ownership and that those who create the conditions of the oppressed group express this power in the form of laws that function to serve the bourgeoisie’s interests (Marx, 2004, p.129).
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
In 1929, America underwent an economic crisis. It was the longest and most severe depression of the industrialized western world. This was known as the Great Depression. The cause of this tragic event was partially caused by buying stock in credit. Banks handed out loans to people but when the stock market crashed, they couldn’t pay back the loan.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.
During the recent years homelessness has increased eminently. Although homelessness is not a new phenomenon it has become a huge social issue in today’s society. In urban areas homelessness is visible by the masses but ignored by society’s negative perception. Characterized as unstable individuals, alcoholics and criminals by society, these negative stereotypes have only escalate the issue. Homeless can occur at any stage of life for multitude of factors.
