On March, 2008, Jessie Dotson went to 722 Lester Street, where his brother, Cecil, lived with his girlfriend and their children. Jessie killed four adults were multiple gunshot wounds, killed two children, ages 2 and 4, who were beaten and stabbed. Three other children, one just 2 months old, also were beaten and stabbed, but survived the attack.

Being an adolescent, who is in fact african american writing this essay, of course the first case which caught my attention was the 2012 Trayvon Martin case. Note, Trayvon was not killed by a member of law enforcement, rather, he was killed by a vigilante. But although Trayvon was not killed by a member of law enforcement this stirred up attention across america especially in the african american community concerning the law and members of its enforcement (judges, lawyers, police officers etc.) Following Trayvon’s death, deaths of other african americans by police officers started receiving national attention. At least 303 lives of African Americans were lost due to police shootings in 2016. Why is this number so high and why is it growing? Many people believe the brutality of police and authorities has grown stronger in the past several years towards those of color, and that it is becoming incorrigible. Back in 2012, the life of Trayvon Martin was lost suddenly due to a watch captain of the neighborhood, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman had claimed to see a “suspicious person” and was directed to stay in his SUV, however those orders were not followed.

Almost every year hundreds to thousands of African Americans are killed due to police brutality. Over like a hundred of African Americans were killed this year because of police brutality. Everyone who has been a part of police brutality, their families have to go on with life knowing someone really special to them is not in their life anymore. Many families are devastated this year because they have lost a family member or a spouse due to this situation. Many African Americans think that police brutality is not right.

According to “The Washington Post”, Last year 963 African Americans were shot and killed by police. Ever since the 1960s Africans has been fighting for equality; in the Eric Garner case and Michael Brown, it demonstrated how White police officers abuse and misuse their power towards African Americans. Since the increase of police brutality communities has had marches, rallies, and even the Black Lives Matters movements as a response to show that Polices’ abuse of power is unacceptable.
