In Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Theme, Tony Kushner depicts a series of characters who were struggled to live in 1980s. They were challenged by disease, sexual oriental and religion and got lost without appropriate self-identification. Prior Walter as the protagonist of the play, he connects the other characters and his fate drives the plots. At the star of the play, he was the most despair and pathetic character who got AIDS and abandoned by his lover, Louis. However, when he rejects the angel-imposed fate as a prophet, he achieves nirvana not only physically, but spiritually as well.

Harper, a Mormon housewife who suffered long lasting emotional disorder, happened to meet Prior in her hallucination. In the hallucination, they shared deep secrets because of “the threshold of revelation”. Kushner defines “the threshold of revelation” as a mysterious link between Prior and Harper, but it can also be viewed as the reflection of reality: “Louis leaves Prior when he knows Prior has AIDS; Joe and Harper split when he comes out of the closet”. Their lives seem to be parallel and similar, To make the connection stronger, Louis and Joe fall in love that was where came the dramatic conflict. Louis goes to the hospital and announces that he is going to move out when Joe goes home and comes out of closet. Harper tries to “snapped the tether” in her hallucination that travel to Antarctica with her imaginary travel agent (Kushner, ch.3).
