Honesty can get you somewhere but can’t get you places. Tom Robinson was an African American male who was accused of sexual assault and ended up being guilty because of his color. Atticus was Tom’s Lawyer. Bob Ewell was a person who was against Tom. Bob Ewell was going for all these people but first Judge Taylor because he made him look like a fool in court. Then he went for Atticus' kids because he was the lawyer for Tom Robinson. The importance of honesty shows in To Kill a Mockingbird by the characters and how it brings out their own personalities. He lied about that because Atticus thought that Jem killed him but Sherrif Heck Tate kept telling him that he fell on his own knife. As Harper Lee writes, “ Bob Ewell fell on his knife. He killed himself” (Lee 273). Heck, Tate was protecting Boo Radley from future talk about how he killed Bob Ewell. Tom Robison was always helping and doing chores for Mayella. Tom would always help out and was never mean or never hurt Mayella. Mayella brought Tom into a shack and tried to kiss him, but then Bob Ewell saw what she was doing and beat up his daughter Mayella. Then, Mayella had to accuse Tom of sexual assault. Mayella lied about that because she was afraid of her dad Bob Ewell who might beat her if she didn’t lie. Atticus was to believe that the jury would not believe a white girl but he was surprised. It was when Mayellea was speaking and the judge asked who did it. As Harper Lee writes, “Who is he Mayella pointed to Tom Robinson.” (Lee 180). After that, Mayella started to cry because she was forced to lie about Tom. Mayella lied and cried because she knew she just ruined a life but would have been beaten up by her father. Atticus was shocked because Tom was sentenced to life. Tom was in prison and tried to escape but did not make it after being shot seventeen times by the police. Atticus was sad after hearing Tom died. It was sad that Tom was accused of sexual assault and had no say just because of his skin color.
