The Color of Pride In James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis" the red imagery is symbolized as pride and how it can get its way in a persons life and causes a person to make bad choices. There are many pieces of evidence to prove this and I have chosen two pieces to prove this correct. Bravery is performed everyday by many people, and it has played a big part in World War 2. World War 2 was a horrible time for the Jews due to the Germans and Adolf Hitler. In order for the Jews to survive, they had to trust their faith and do the unthinkable. They had to give up their children to other people knowing that they might not see them again. They needed to act brave for their families and ensure they had solace.

In Mary Jane Auch’s historical fiction novel Ashes of Roses, the courage of immigrants is the heart of the story. The book follows the young protagonist Rose Nolan, an Irish immigrant coming to New York City. She meets challenges after challenge as she navigates her new life in America, while also making new friends such as Gussie Garoff.
Throughout one’s life, one tends to adapt to the traditions of their family, and gain a significant bond with their loved ones, including their siblings. However, that connection a person gains can either be diminished or forgotten due to a sense of different mindsets between family members. The two stories “The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolff and “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin indicate that sibling rivalry occurs when each member does not understand or acknowledge their sibling’s perspective, and this builds a wall barrier between the siblings.

These choices signify rather or not the character are strong enough to admit the truth or weak and lie. Some might say the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller deals primarily with human weakness; however, the truly dominant subject is clearly courage because of John Proctor tries to tell the truth about Abigale and the girls, Elizabeth Proctor supporting her husband choice even though they have children to raise, and Giles Corey rather be pressed than lie about being a part of witchcraft.
In The Crucible written by Arthur Miller in 1953, Miller illustrates the importance of seeing past pride and listening to other people. The Crucible is about the small town of Salem Massachusetts. The story takes place during the Salem witch trials. It is centered on a few main characters, Reverend Parris, Reverend Hale, Abigail Williams, some other girls in the town, John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Judge Danforth. Abigail is a 17-year-old girl who is trying to lie her way back into John Proctor’s heart.

In Arthur Miller’s dramatic play The Crucible, John Proctor, the protagonist, symbolized truth and justice by displaying honor and pride in his name. The change in balance between those two attributes acted as a catalyst in defining moments of the play. In the beginning, Proctor equally reflected both pride and honor in separate events. However, when forced to make a decision, he chose honor over pride. Ultimately, both his honor and pride pushed him to commit the ultimate sacrifice.
