“But in my terms of honor I stand aloof, and will no reconcilement. Till by some elder masters, of known honor, I have a voice and precedent of peace. To keep my name ungored.” (V, ii, 3882-3889) This quote reflects the honor that all of the sons have to do the best they can to avenge the death of their father. In the play “The Tragedy of Hamlet; Prince of Denmark” by Shakespeare, the storyline focuses on avenging the death of fathers. Honor is a huge concept that is shown throughout the whole play. Three characters want to avenge the death of their fathers and will do almost anything to accomplish the task, Shakespeare does this to send a message to the readers to show how he feels about avenging the death of fathers. Laertes does not know the full story about Hamlet killing Polonius, it was an accident, Hamlet meant to kill Claudius but he killed Polonius on accident. Hamlet does apologize to Laertes but Laertes says, “But in my terms of honor I stand aloof, and will no reconcilement. Till by some elder masters, of known honor, I have a voice and precedent of peace. To keep my name ungored. But till that time I do receive your offered love like love. And will not wrong it.” (V, ii, 3882-3893) What Laertes means is that he cannot forgive Hamlet, no apology will be accepted until he comes to peace, he will do whatever it takes to feel at peace with Hamlet killing his father but until then he cannot accept the love that Hamlet is giving. Laertes is a man of his word and kills Hamlet with poison, Laertes then forgives him and dies. Although Laertes died, he still accomplished avenging the death of his father,
