Please provide an essay that explains why you chose your intended program of study. What interests you the most about this major? (50-500) I was raised on dinner table debates. Small and unassuming, yet tenaciously opinionated, nothing made me more content than discord. My family’s conversations are dominated by heated discussions on the controversies of everything. Fighting over the dinner table urges me to find my own answers and validity. While I like challenging other people’s beliefs, I never considered the importance of challenging my own until taking economics. During AP Economics, I never went hungry. The interactions with a diverse student body and faculty are the best possible reward for any undergraduate student. Each Honors College student has a unique subset of knowledge. They are able to convey their own beliefs on a topic, while maintaining a flexible mindset. In short, a Honors College student is nothing short of the individual I envision myself becoming. As a member of the Honors College, I hope to gain a greater perspective on the interface between science and policy, through interactions with a student body with similar aims yet diverse perceptions. Such a community has the ability to create media sources that don’t dumb down international conflicts, but instead share their knowledge with those less informed. I will be a spark, with my education as a catalyst. Writing has the ability to make the theoretical real. As a writer, I am uniquely poised to show people differing perspectives within communities. I can bring daily banalities alive to give hope or make caricatures out of people’s stances to show them their biases. I want to make people think. I would spread awareness through writing, and would extend it to a role of civic engagement. I can be the window between the reader and the real-world issue, and lay a platform for change.
