Thoughout The Joy Luck Club, hope is a trait that is present in most characters. Much of the actions and decisions made in the book are based on looking forward into the future, and that is why hope is very essential. The four mothers immigrate to America in a big part because they have a vision of their children having a better future in the USA than in China. The mothers hope that their daughters will be able to live successful, happy lives and still maintain their Chinese cultures. As their daughters grow older, the mothers look forward into their futures and fear that they will make the same mistakes that they did in the past. On the daughter’s side, many look forward into their own futures with apprehension about decisions that need to be made. From these occurrences, it may be concluded that one of the main themes the book runs on is hope. …show more content…

During the first part of the story, Jing-Mei begins telling the many stories that her mother told her while she was alive. Many of the stories told took place in China during hard times for her mother and friends. The main story is of how the Joy Luck Club came together. The original Joy Luck Club was conceived of as an idea to cheer up the women involved and to allow them to extract joy and pleasure out of a time of great stress and worry. The Joy Luck Club allowed the women to focus on the positives and also try and deal with their pain and loss at the same time. Note what Suyan
