Of Mice and Men is about two guys named George and Lennie who travel around together trying to find work to earn money during the Great Depression. They dream of a better life, but the dream is all taken away when they are so close to living it. Hope is a feeling of expectation for a specific thing to happen. Dreams are enjoyed fantasies about something greatly desired. This theme has developed throughout the book by the different dreams George and Lennie have. George recites the dream to Lennie like a story, which shows that they don’t really believe in it, even though the things they are dreaming of are quite modest. George is the one that thinks things through and considers how they can reach their goal. With saying that, George is the one that comes up with how they will get the farm and how long they will have to work to be able to pay for it. All of Lennie’s future is about tending the rabbits. He would always talk about the rabbits but not mice, chickens or cats. It is nice to have a goal like this but it is about as unrealistic for him as it would be if George wanted to become president. The dream about the farm they are going to buy kind of sounds like Lennie’s bedtime story. When we are introduced to the dream farm this way, we’re primed to recognise that it’s never going to become a reality but it seems that the characters don’t know that yet. Curley’s dream is to be a man who is respected by everyone. He wants to prove to everyone that he is a strong individual even though he is physically tiny. We can see this by the way he always wants to deal with the big guys. Whenever he has the chance to speak to a big guy he takes it. For example, when Curley first met George and Lennie, he asked them if they were the new guys that his father was waiting for and George answered him but Curley immediately responded and said, “Let the big guy
