Horatio Gates Horatio Gates served as an American general during the Revolutionary War; he was known to be one of the Revolutions most vexed military figures. Gates encountered many successful battles, he was also known for having very little courage when it came to fighting in the fields. Furthermore, Gates generated a plan to have George Washington removed as commander-in-chief of the Continental army. Lastly, Horatio was prominent for being in constant competition with George Washington, causing friction between the two leaders. Despite his successes, there were many inferior moments of his 79-year life.
Horatio was involved in Fort Duquesne, and the Seven Years War he came out the victor of both battles. During these crusades, Gates would attempt to find a way to retreat avoiding further damage to his army or himself. On August 16, 1780, battle of Camden was fought the American forces were put under Major General Gates command. The American forces suffered one of the most brutal defeats in American history. Gates gathered the troops he could then fled the battle once he noticed signs of unsteadiness, his coward like decisions ruined his reputation.

In 1775 Gates was appointed adjutant- and brigadier-general, in a letter Horatio stated to have the greatest respect for Washington. Prior to the war Gates propounded that a committee of congress were to be sent to keep scrutiny on George Washington. As soon as George was in different command, Gates began to gain favor with congress and plot against his commander. Washington wasn't unaware of Gates actions later on he wrote, "I discovered very early in the war symptoms of coldness & constraint in General Gates' behavior to me. These increased as he rose into greater
