We know it as the race that stops a nation; its popularity and ‘intriguing’ nature has caused Australians to suspend their life for a day to watch the annual race, and as a result of the admiration for this day, it is a public holiday. It is not as glorious as it seems despite being culturally significant in Australia… For a race that only lasts for a few minutes, months of excruciating training is undergone by the horse that is to partake. The horse must train until it is able to run 800 meters in between 46 and 50 seconds. As a result of horse racing, a great amount of horses is bred, more than the industry requires and many more than are likely to be successful, leading to wastage as stated by the RSPCA Victoria President, Dr Hugh Wirth. Of the 20% of horses that are unsuccessful or surplus, they are sold to be slaughtered and made as pet food – dog meat. An investigation conducted by abc found that failed racehorses were being shot for pet food. This means that thousands of young and often healthy horses are sent to knackeries every year just because there are too many of them. How absurd! It is estimated that only 300 out of every 1,000 foals produced will ever start in a race and therefore, the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses has claimed that some 13,000 horses are put down annually. As soon as a horse is no longer able to earn money due to poor performance, illness, injury or behavioural or other problems, it goes to slaughter. We need to realise that racehorses are not pet food! Just imagine the horses walking into the killing box and they know they are going to die, how must they feel?
