What if what we believed about the evolution of species was not all true? A new study by paleontologists have determined that environments and ecosystems varying were responsible for the evolution of horses over the past 20 million years. They were able to determine this through close examination and analyzing one hundred forty species of horses, majority of them being extinct, therefore, producing decades of research on the fossil history of this group. What they determined defies a trusted theory, that combines evolutionary success of horses with adaptation responses to the spreading of grasslands millions of years ago. This is important as it challenges everything we believed about the evolution of horses. Researcher Juan L. Cantalapiedra …show more content…
Referring to the results that researchers found, evolutionary changes happen at a much more gradual rate than we believed prior. Furthermore, Cantalapiedra and peers demonstrated that the recently evolved horse species were alike ecologically, hence, these results suggest that increasing environmental variability served as the force that drove this evolution rather than adaptation responses. Not only is this important for what we know about the evolution of horses, but this can serve as the blueprint into founding out more about the evolution of all the other species that are or were on Earth. This can cause many new discoveries involving changes in climate and its relationship with evolution. If so, it will affect everyone as our Biology and other scientific books may have to be rewritten due to newly found evidence on the evolution of species. In addition, teachers and professors may have to begin altering their own methods and incorporating this information into new ones in order to properly educate students on this topic.
