Childhood Trauma Affects Mental Health Problems In Adulthood. Emotional trauma can affect children for the rest of their lives. Over time, the hope is that children learn how to cope and move forward in life. In the novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. The protagonist, named Henry, experiences trauma, hardships, loss, and eventually learns how to cope. Throughout the novel Henry experiences emotional trauma which leads him to become more resilient, look for ways to bounce back, take a positive perspective on specific situations and move forward into the future. Oftentimes, parents want what’s best for their children without taking into account what the child wants and needs. Henry's father forces him to go to Rainier to get an American education. Henry is bullied for being the “odd one”. Henry didn’t fit in with the Chinese children or the American children. He then meets Keiko, a Japanese girl, and realizes he’s not alone. When Henry came home one day, Chaz and his father were trying to make a business deal with Henry’s father, and they needed Henry to translate. Henry didn’t like the conversation so he didn’t translate correctly, resulting in ruining his father’s business deal. Research states, “Authoritarian parenting includes raising children who have low self-esteem, trouble managing emotions, rebelliousness and difficulty with independent thinking” (Perry). According to the research, because of Henry’s authoritarian parents, he has a desire to rebel because they make decisions for him and don’t include his needs and desires in the process.
