Anyone can make a difference, and they may not even know it. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros talks about growing up as a Mexican in an American neighborhood and the challenges that come along with it. The main character Esperanza talks about people who made a difference in the neighborhood and her life. It only takes one person to make a difference, but others would argue that it takes many people, each with different qualities, to make a difference. A person can make a difference even if they may not know it. Cathy says to Esperanza, “She lives upstairs, over there, next door to Joe the baby-grabber. Keep away from him, she says. He's full of danger.”(Cisneros). Cathy says that to Esperanza without any evidence causing Esperanza to think negatively of Joe when he might be a nice person. This negatively affects the neighborhood and makes people scared of Joe even though he may not have done anything bad. “Then she was sorry and said I could stay–just for today, not tomorrow or the day after–you go home.”(Cisneros). Everyone who lives in the neighborhood and their actions can affect others' opinions of the community.
