To kill a mockingbird was a political statement, yet it was not meant for the public to so widely see. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the award winning novel by Harper Lee, many important topics are touched upon with themes such as family and justice, however, the most prevalent theme is racism and Harper Lee manages to touch upon it many times. Race in Maycomb County helps to determine social class and power, it also creates an unspoken set of rules regarding code of conduct and how many people interact in their relationships, both interracial and not. In Maycomb County race is a major determining factor in a person’s positioning in the social hierarchy.
In the historical fiction novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the issues of racial inequality and injustice towards the innocent are exposed and clearly stated. The novel is a story of a young girl and her coming of age in the Deep South. As she grows in age, she begins to understand the unjust ways of the world, and how some people who are accused, such as Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley, are faultless. Lee’s symbol of the mockingbird is a representation of these characters. She shares her opinion that it is a sin, physically and verbally, to attack them.
The theme of this novel is "Not everything is the way you predict it is". I believe this thematic statement suits the story because throughout the book there are lots of surprises, and most situations don't go the way people predict they will. For example, Aunt Alexandra was first seen as mean, according to her attitude towards Scout. At the end of the book Aunt Alexandra hands Scout her overalls, as mentioned in the story, "the garments she most despised." Because she always wanted Scout to be a lady and wear dresses.
Green is a color that is mostly associated with the emotion, envy. Color symbolism is common in many different works and is generally associated with emotion. In this scene, Emma is at the peak of her unhappiness with her marriage and therefore at the peak of her envy towards other people she sees around her. For years, I wondered why there was so much greed and tension among social classes. Growing up I saw this so often that I began to believe that the wealthy simply hated us for being poor. As I grew older, I realized that at the root of our societal conflicts and separation, inequality was at the core. I was fascinated by Walter Scheidel’s book titled The Great Leveler, because he speaks on how inequality progressed in societies throughout history and how the only effective method to compress the inequality gap is through destruction. In the book, Scheidel states that “the four horsemen are intended to cause destruction in our society to eventually restore social stability” (Scheidel).
