The location of the Houston Food Bank projects consisted of two locations; 525 Portwall Street and 2445 North Freeway, Houston, Texas 77029. Houston Food Bank is centrally located in the heart of Second and Third Ward and it is not within the confinements of the safest working environment in Houston. Both locations are known for drug activity, gangs and are largely poverty stricken. The wards consist of the original Union Station and residential areas that were once full of beautiful Victorian homes built during the 1800’s. After World War II in 1930, the community became segregated and soon became a fully black community in both wards and the Victorian homes were left in ruins and soon labelled as crack houses. It will be a slow transformation process but the wards will soon flourish. Upon reflection of the experience, service learning is about the benevolent learning of each experience. A quote from an unknown author states “ Before you start to judge me, step into my shoes and walk my life I’m living and if you get as far as I am, just maybe you will see how strong I really am” (Pinterest, 2015). It is the reflection learned that although we are working individuals in this world, we are all one paycheck away from being in the same situation as these people are in. Everybody has a burden and we as humans must reflect on our own judgment call. As I think of my reflection as a human being, community leader and a business member, the three learning relations are humility, sense of community and being inspired. My first reflection as a human being is I gained a deeper personal understanding and examined my own strengths and weaknesses. I never take life for granted because anyone can lose a job, family and have to resort to asking for others for help.
