Personally, I agree with this opinion. When breaking the rules there are consequences to go along with it. Prison can be a very violent place, as there are many stressors and reasons for frustration and depression. Having members of different gangs, does not calm the situation down. Cells and inmates have to be regularly checked in order to keep contraband such as drugs, liquor, phones ect.
If the administration did not keep an eye them, prison gangs would be able to expand and eat away everything the correctional system is trying to do: rehabilitate offenders. In response to the gang situation, the correctional system has set up intelligence units to track and observe prison gang movements. They then have methods to help gang members get out of their life long contract. These methods are referred to as “deganging.” Deganging helps educate and coax gang members to straighten out their lives by renouncing their membership.
In exchange for the gangs allegiance once within prison walls will have the protection of the Nuestra Familia prison gang. Although not as powerful as the Mexican Mafia, the Nuestra Familia is not any less violent within prisons.
Since the beginning of time there have always been clicks and groups that were made up of people who had the same goals in mind or same interests. However, nowadays gangs consist mostly of people who commit the same type of crimes together that involve drug charges or murders. When in prison, we see that those who were in gangs are still in gangs and that those who were not, are likely to join during their sentence. Naturally the prisons are filled with criminals who not only bring with them a record of past wrong but also an attitude of anger and or survival when they walk behind the walls of prison. According to the American Psychological Association one major constraint is that there is a conflict between the two different basic philosophies’, one being that psychology is profoundly dissimilar because it’s primarily geared more to being rehabilitative, while corrections is punitive in nature as a punishment-oriented occupation (American Psychological Association, 2003). This is an extremely daunting task, as the inmates themselves are counterproductive towards the goal of bettering themselves much of the time. Inmates often will seek the path of least resistance towards whatever immediate goal is presented to them and will manipulate whatever situation for personal gain. This issue is further complicated, by the security risk that these inmates can present not only to the outside communities, but also to the general population of those incarcerated. Another major stumbling block towards strategic planning is the hold that gangs have within the institutions and their tight management of internal operations on an unofficial capacity.
Prison gangs thrive on crime within the facility. If not addressed their involvement in crime will continue to grow and pose a threat to other inmates, staff, and the institution. If procedures are not put into place then gang membership will only continue and remain a safety concern. Administration must ensure their staff members are adequately trained and know how to act and deal with the gangs. Because the prison community is so private more research needs to be done to understand the workings of prison gangs and get more current, detailed, data.
Gangs make its members safer. Its members are usually all the time in pairs/groups and they all watch out for each other. If another gang tries to confront them, their numbers could beat the other smaller group. Even if a gang member is alone, being in a gang teaches them self-protection.
Hatred, depression, greed, lust and all animalistic sides of the human mind drive those to be in gangs. At first an individual can join these to fulfill such needs. They are intertwined with a network of everybody knowing everybody, especially those outside this network. It becomes dangerous as gang members know the average citizen would want them to join. If they refuse then siblings will be raped, injured, and threatened to be forcibly absorbed into a cause.
Some teens become gang members because they feel a sense of belonging and protection. Therefore, the community should focus on building strong relationship and positive role-models.
