How Can We Lessen The Use Of Technology In Fahrenheit 451

1127 Words5 Pages

In order to become less reliant on technology, society must learn to adapt without it. Society has become very reliant on technology that people do not learn. In the book the Eleventh Plague, a book about a post apocalyptic America, people were very reliant on technology much like today’s society but learned to adapt when it wasn’t available. In Fahrenheit 451 citizens struggle to control their technology use. In Fahrenheit 451, one of Bradbury’s biggest concerns regarding technology in society is that it will hinder socializing, parenting, and education. What we need to do is lessen the use of technology and read a book. We should lessen the use of technology to become less dependent on it as a society because it hinders parenting and socializing. …show more content…

This can be shown when Faber says, “But we do need a breather. We do need knowledge… The books are to remind us what asses and fools we are. They’re Caesar’s praetorian guard, whispering as the parade roars down the avenue, ‘Remember, Caesar, thou art mortal.’ Most of us can’t rush around, talk to everyone, know all the cities of the world, we haven’t time, money or that many friends… The only way the average chap will ever see ninety-nine percent of them is in a book.”(Bradbury 114). This shows that society needs to lessen the use of technology and gather information in books because it can reflect on how society was or is at the moment. Also, it is to everyone’s benefit to learn about the environment around them in order to learn. This can be shown when Montag escapes the hound, “The Hound reached the river. Overhead the great racketing fans of the helicopters hovered. He felt the river pull him further on its way, into the darkness. Then the lights switched back to the land, the helicopters swerved over the city again, as if they picked up another trail.” Nature has triumphed over technology because the helicopters could not find Montag in a forest. This represents how Montag leaves technology for nature and we find later he is happy which is what society should do. Also, people are found to be unhappy with technology. A study by the University of Maryland found, “A new study by sociologists at the University of Maryland concludes that unhappy people watch more TV, while people who describe themselves as very happy spend more time reading and socializing.”(Robinson). People watching TV like Mildred in the novel show signs of being unhappy and that people who read books like Montag and Granger are happier. Some might say that combining the two is very beneficial. A survey done by the Pew Research Center found
