Could winning the lottery really be a dreadful experience? Well in “The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson, winning the lottery can be the most terrible thing that will ever happen to you. Because in the story, winning the lottery, could cost you your life, rather than buying a better one. Mrs. Hutchinson was a housewife, married to Bill Hutchinson. She wore an old faded house dress. Together, Bill and Tessie had 3 children. On the day of the lottery, Mrs. Hutchinson was washing dishes and she was late the the square because she forgot it was the day of the lottery. Once her family had been chosen, she was instant to call out, “It Wasn’t Fair!” and she was willing to give up her own kids in fear for her own life. She had this fear, because winning the lottery, meant that someone in her family was to be stoned to death. At the end of the story, she was chosen to be stoned, and she continued to scream out, “It wasn't fair!” Mr. Summers was a round faced, jovial man. He wore a clean white shirt and blue jeans. Mr. Summers did not change, in the beginning he was for the lottery, and at the end, he hadn't changed his mind. Mrs. Hutchinson, However, changed dramatically. At the beginning of the story, it was clear she didn't like the lottery, but she didn't show it. She was late, showing she didn't care, and when her family won, she instantly started to change. She was calm but she got mad, upset and she was willing to give up her own children to save her life. She kept shouting, ”It wasn't fair!” But in reality she was just scared for her life.
