As I walk through front door, numerous shoulder mounts of trophy animals line the walls along with an occasional fish mount. My taste buds water as the delightful smell of freshly smoked sausage fills my nose. The “cha-ching” of the cash register is a sign business is booming. In the back of the store, the bandsaw is screaming, and the grinder is crunching. My Grandpa, Clarence Psyck Jr., bought the business in 1969 from his father, Clarence Psyck Sr., so I was born into the business. Over the years it has affected me in many ways, such as, little free time, my hands freeze easily, it has taught me responsibility which developed a good work ethic, and I have learned how to work with people. Sticking my numb hands into a bucket of hot water to warm them up caused this. I distinctly remember one time when we were butchering at Greg Pont’s farm. The temperature was 0 degrees Fahrenheit with a -23 degree windchill. My hands were so cold I was shocking them in the water every minute. I lost feeling almost instantly, and my hands burned severely. It felt like a thousand knives protruded my hands the second they were dipped into the water. Being able to own up to a mistake is hard, but it will only benefit someone. An employer likes it more if someone admits to an error, rather than denying it to make it look good. It is embarrassing to have done wrong, but there is always something to be learned from it. I was cutting venison one time for a customer, but I forgot to read the cutting order. Before realizing it, I had already boned a shoulder. The customer wanted steaks, so I tried to hide it. I was pissed and embarrassed, and grandpa only made it worse. He chewed me out and asked what the hell I was thinking. It was not a major deal, but he was furious. After a while, he regained his composure and told me it would not have mattered if I would have told him right away, and he was angry because I tried to hide it. In the end, I learned it was more beneficial to tell somebody what happened than trying to hide it. A good work ethic is key in life, it identifies a person. Over the years, the store has taught me a good work ethic and why it is so important. A boss wants employees who work their fullest and do not slack off. A job referral will also be hard to find because if a person has never worked hard before, nobody will refer him or
