Twelve Seconds to Change the World.
December 17, 1903, Kitty Hawk Beach, Orville and Wilbur Wright became the first people to manufacture a working aircraft and successfully fly it (Freedman, 1991). What looking back was a brief flight bearing just 120 feet from its starting point, in the span of 12 seconds was about to become one of the greatest technological advancements the world had seen (Tobin, 2003). Without realizing it Orville and Wilbur Wright had forever changed the course of world history by doing what was thought to be impossible. . .flying. Airplanes have come a long way in their 113 year history since their conception. In that relatively short time frame airplanes have gone from a sheer impracticality to becoming a commonality

Airplanes have an intricate role in the world economy, as they provide over eight million jobs directly in the airline industry along with countless other jobs relying on airplanes to ship products (Budd, Griggs, Howarth 2013). Airplanes are said to be responsible for transporting 6.4 trillion dollars worth of goods annually, which boils down to around 3.5 percent of the of world's economy directly relying on this industry, with no signs of declining in the future. (Budd, Griggs, Howarth 2013). With trillions of dollars and an innumerable amount of jobs the on the line airplanes, and the airline industry has well established themselves. Now instead of solely focusing on expanding their empire focus has been placed on making airplanes and their industry efficient as possible. Efficiency is key in this industry and small things like altering runway placement and ensuring full flights have helped reduce excess by 28% meaning lower cost tickets for passengers and an overall healthier environment (Lester, 2010). Ticket prices being at an all time low have enticed roughly 54% of all international tourists to travel by air (Tourism : Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders). Tourism is the largest commercial industry in the world, employing roughly thirty-six million people so …show more content…
When most people hear of airplanes in the Military they assume it’s top secret aircraft that the public will never see; this could not be farther from the truth. Most technological advancements in the airplanes were first developed for military use then later trickled down to commercial airliners like radar and jet engines. Airplanes were introduced into militaries around the world in 1915, but it would not be until 1918 that the Royal Air Force in England became the first military branch made of only aircraft (Wolford, Warner, 2015). The timing was perfect shortly after most militaries began to adopt the use of airplanes they were put to the test in the first World War. It would not be until World War two when airplanes full potential could be reached, with more advanced designs and powerful engines they were able to carry out large bombing missions (Arce, 2013). Then on August 6th, 1945 the largest impact to date from an airplane was felt, the dropping of the atomic bomb by the Enola Gay a model B-29 bomber had just dropped the most powerful weapon at the time on Hiroshima, Japan (Newman, 1995). Since that point Airplane technology has been rapidly developed for military use. Military powers have been trying to outdo each other in the air, we have now gotten to the point where people can be thousands of miles away controlling an airplane
