Alfred Adler was born in 1870 in Vienna, a second son of middle-class secular Jewish parents. Like Freud, Adler was a physician, and in 1902, he became a charter member of Freud's organization. However, personal and professional differences between the two men led to Adler's departure from the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society in 1911. Adler soon founded his own group, the Society for Individual Psychology. (McGraw-Hill, 2015) Similarly to Freud, Adler also suffered from enormous amounts of childhood illnesses. Adler attained a medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1895. In 1898, he published his first article on public health and textile industry. “Adler identified such inferiority feelings with femininity, and superiority striving as masculine.” (Sollod, Wilson, Monte, 2009) the masculine protest was to be applied to women because we as women grow up with an inferior complex in terms of feeling this way towards men. Also during this time, it was unconventional for a women to portray such gender roles that today have become more acceptable. “Alfred Adler said that Parents who show either directly or indirectly that they wanted a boy instead of the girl they got are among the major factors that leads to the development of a masculine protest. The more the girl hates being among the weaker sex (according to what she learned) the more likely she is to develop a masculine protest.”(Radwan, 2006-2015) Another contributing factor is if a girl does not outgrow these inferior feelings then she will most likely become a lesbian or never marry because it reminds her of her feminine role as a …show more content…

Adler further classified an individual as a ruling-dominant type, the getting-leaning type, the avoidant type, and the socially useful type. The ruling-dominant type is assertive, aggressive, and active. “They manipulate and master the life situation and the people in it. Their activity levels are high but are combined with a minimal degree of social interest and little capacity for empathy.”(Sollod, Wilson, Monte, 2009) The getting-leaning type are dependent upon others to supply their needs and provide entertainment used for personal gain. The avoidant type achieves success by not acknowledging a problem. As stated in an article, “mental health is typified by social interest or constructive concern and activity to promote the well-being of others.”(Sollod, Wilson, Monte, 2009) The last typology is the socially useful type which is the most constructive aims to assess problems accurately and efficiently and have a realistic view of their
