There, in a battle at Issus, he defeated the Persian king Darius III. However, when Darius fled, Alexander's army was unable to capture him. Alexander's army then moved south into Phoenicia and captured the naval base of the Phoenician fleet fighting for Darius. One of these bases is the city of Tyr, located on an island about 800 meters from the coast. Alexander commanded his engineers to build a causeway across the island, making it the peninsula that still exists today.
