Role of the military- The Ancient Egyptians had very basic weapons in the beginning, but their weapons become more advanced as the civilization progressed. In the beginning, weapons were made of stone and wood. As the civilization grew, they switched to bronze then iron weapons. The most common weapons used were spears, bows, chariots, swords, daggers, and axes. Soldiers often stayed in mud brick huts and consumed vegetables and bread. If they were not needed for battles, they would be used as farmers. At times, men were required to join the Egyptian army. The majority of the time, it was optional. Soldiers wore a linen kilt and sandals. Leather armor was worn occasionally. When they were not fighting, soldiers were used from construction and farming. Foreign soldiers were often employed to fight with the Egyptian Army. The majority of the time, bows were the weapon for choice for the army. They also utilized "shock troops" to break enemy lines. The pharaoh was in charge of the military and made all decisions regarding it. Generals often advised the pharaoh. Many generals were part of the royal family. However, there were several major wars. There were several battles with the Syrians. One major battle with the Syrians was the Battle of Megiddo in 1479 B.C. They won the battle and gained many chariots and horses. They also engaged in war with the Hyksos. The Hyksos took over the lower part of Egypt for a period of time. It was eventually regained by the Egyptians. Other civilizations they battled included Greece, Rome, and Hittite. The Ancient Egyptian conquered a lot of land through history.
