Ancient Greece made a lasting impact on the modern Western world through its contributions to philosophy, science, art, politics, and sports. These values, ideas, and accomplishments continue to greatly influence various aspects of contemporary Western society. Therefore, I fully agree that ancient Greece has profoundly shaped modern Western culture, and this can be demonstrated through numerous examples and evidence in this week's assignment. 1/ Philosophy and Science One of the most significant and early contributions of ancient Greece to the modern West was in the realm of philosophy. The philosophical ideas of Greek thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are widely recognized as the foundation for Western philosophical thought. Chowdhury and Datta (2024) note that their ideas on ethics, politics, and cosmology continue to be studied and applied in universities and institutions globally. Furthermore, their philosophies have become integral to modern civilization. For example, Plato, through his work "Republic" and the concept of an ideal state, has significantly impacted modern political thought by advocating that rulers should be philosopher-kings, individuals possessing greater wisdom and morality (Garland, 2020).
