Antonia Ford was known as a confederate spy during the Civil War, who worked with the Confederate States Army. She was born in Fairfax Court House,Virginia in 1838 and died in Washington D.C in 1871. Growing up, she lived with a local merchant (her father) and a sessional (her mother) who talked about the war quite often, which is where she got her ideas for becoming a spy. While growing up, she attended a private school for girls called Coombe Cottage. After attending the Coombe Cottage private school, she attended the Buckingham College Institute in Buckingham, Virginia. After attending the Buckingham College Institute, she became a volunteer spy for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. She aided in 2 raids and 8 battles. In 1861 the Union occupied Fairfax, which is when Ford eavesdropped on the officers and gathered valuable information. She mainly heard about the strengths of the troops and their next moves. She passed along the information that she received to General Stuart. Ford was such a great confederate spy, she got recognized for her work by General Stuart. This is where Antonia observed the Union and gathered information to give to General Stuart and John Singleton Mosby. Mosby was a commander if irregulars of whose men had been taking Union supplies but on March 8th, 1863, Mosby and his men captured officers and about 50 horses. When they went to go capture the officers and horses, Mosby found General Stoughton asleep and took him as a prisoner while he was
