Ben Tillman did a good job at being governor and helping change SC into a better place. He was a major contributor to the financial growth of South Carolina. Tillman helped educate and grow South Carolina farmers. \ Before Ben Tillman, South Carolina had major financial problems and there was a decrease in crops/crop sales. There were major droughts during the time as well as parasites. Many farmers during the time grew the same crops, so the problem that Ben saw was that the people of South Carolina needed to diversify the crops that they grew. Since South Carolina had all the problems with growing crops, other countries saw it as a chance to earn more money so they started growing the crops and then selling them to America. From there South Carolina just lost more money which farmers already had very little of, it was so bad that many farmers lost their homes since they couldn't afford to go and sell the crops. Farmers that could grow crops would over produce them and not mix up what they were growing so no one wanted to buy that stuff. He was a part of the Hampton Red Shirt and was fast to blame someone for something that went wrong. Also he was known as a very racist man but really he was but he wasn't at the same time. Tillman had a perfectly good reason for all of this though, he was a very stressed man. He had a 2,200 acre farm with about 30 farm hands to help him with his crops as well as he was the governor of South Carolina for a while and helped South Carolina grow tremendously.
