Benedict Arnold is a historical figure that is famous for his betrayal of America. He grew up in a decently wealthy house hold early on in his life, his mother was a wealthy woman because of her previous marriage. His family would eventually go through some hard times financially and the death of Arnold’s siblings caused Arnold to stress and become a bit of a trouble maker. This wouldn’t have any concern as to why he would betray America would it? Was it the money that was offered? Or was it because of his wife Peggy Shippen? Arnold made headlines as being an outstanding leader on the battlefield while fighting for American freedom in the American Revolution. Peggy Shippen fell in love with Arnold after he wrote a letter to her that made her fall for him. It was very strange because the letter that he wrote to Shippen was very similar to the letter that he wrote Betsy Debois months before (71). The letter that Arnold sent to Shippen was very similar to the one that he sent to Betsy Debois, which means he did not think much of Shippen in the first place because it was sent to Debois only a few months before. Looking back on his childhood when his family was wealthy and then was taken away because of some poor financial decisions, it also played a role on the future and powerful Benedict Arnold. While older and seemed more intelligent, older Arnold spent too much money than he was making and was mad because the promotion process wasn’t happening fast enough. Power and money hungry, Arnold met with the British army and worked out a deal where he would get the best of both worlds, he would be promoted to a higher level in the British Army and he would receive a much greater amount of cash so he can spend more than
