In the year 1871, Germany and Prussia merged, forming one of the most powerful states in the history of Europe. The fusion of Germany and Prussia was caused due to Otto Von Bismarck fighting in the Franco Prussian war, the Danish war, and the Austro-Prussian war. Bismarck's success in the wars rewarded Prussia with enough power to overtake Germany, ultimately forcing Germany to join powers with them. Along with the three wars, Bismark also took action and produced speeches that greatly enforced the unification and made the people in both Prussia and Germany keep their minds open about Bismarck's ideas. The power balance of German states played a massive role in the unification of the two nations. If one state was more powerful than another it would have caused reason for concern among the people as they might think that one state would try to overthrow the others. Before going into the first war, Bismark made a famous speech called the blood iron speech. Bismark read this speech to the people of Prussia, about the Unification of Germany. His speech was meant to send a message to the people that the unification would take strength and blood in the wars, but the Prussian army would not give up. This war was fought against Denmark in 1864. Prussia convinced Austria to join them, with hopes that together they could defeat Denmark.2 This war was an easy win for the Prussians and the Austrians; Denmark surrendered very quick and gave up Schleswig and Holstein.3 This land was then divided up between Denmark and Prussia, which allowed Bismarck to occupy more land and gain more strength, and be one more step closer to unifying Germany. Bismarck fought Austria in the second war, the Austro Prussian war, in 1866.4 Many Europeans falsely thought that Austria was going to win the war and it would only last for a short time. The Prussians had more advanced guns and weapons allowing them to beat Austria and remove them from German affairs. This was not only one step closer to unifying Germany but it also eliminated one of the two strongest states in Europe. The third and final war was the Franco Prussian war, which lasted from 1870 to 1871.6 This war was supposed to unite northern and southern Germany together. The Franco Prussian War was the longest of the three wars Bismarck fought in. By the time the war took place, Prussia had already controlled the majority of Northern Germany. Bismarck fought France, but France stood no chance against Prussia.
