In the year of 1680 in a town called Bristol in the United Kingdom a man by the name of Edward Teach was born. During the time of the triangular trade Queen Anne of Britain hired Teach and a couple of other men to become privateers stationed in Jamaica. Getting a taste of the pirate life, Teach realized that he actually liked it. After his pact with Queen Anne was over Teach stayed a pirate. Teach changed his name to Blackbeard and thus began his first step to becoming North Carolina’s most infamous pirate. Blackbeard operated out of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, harassing ships carrying tobacco, dyes and sugar in and out of the British Colonies. In addition to making off with these ships' cargo, he also took on slave ships. It was known that Blackbeard often used fear and intimidation as his main strategies to take over ships. It was said that Blackbeard braided his beard and tied black ribbons into it. He even lit burning fuses under his hat while taking over ships! Blackbeard was a very smart man. Finding out about this Blackbeard told his crew that they have accomplished all they could at sea. Blackbeard willingly went to turn himself in. He then lived a peaceful life in Bath, North Carolina. He married a woman who thought she could make him “civilized.” While involved in a conversation with very wealthy men and women and his wife, Blackbeard became embarrassed because his wife said some very hurtful things.
