Bobby Jones was the most famous golfer during the 1920s and 1930s. Growing up around the game of golf and finding a mentor at a young age Bobby Jones had a shorter career than most, however, he still had a lasting impact on the game of golf. With the help of his friends and a Wall Street investor, Jones purchased the property and they began working on it in 1931. Jones shot on the course to measure distances for the course. Each hole is named after a flowering plant or tree. Augusta National was completed in 1933. In 1934 the club held its first tournament for qualified amateurs and professionals. “After some discussion with partners, they decided to name it The Masters” (“Finrite 9”). Bobby and his family settled down in a mansion in Atlanta called White Hull. He worked in the executive offices of Coca-Cola. Bobby Jones eventually developed Syringomyelia, a rare spinal cord disease that eventually claimed his life. His hands were nearly frozen as fists and he had to drink his coffee, throwing a straw. He also needed assistance with smoking. He had special utensils he could lodge between his hands and fingers. Jones tragically passed away on December 18th, 1971 at the age of 69.
