a. Booker T. washington got this name because of his land grant institution and his philosophy that African Americans will only succeed if they learned the skills needed and work hard.

a. Judging by the context of this quote I believe it’s meaning is that African Americans should focus on learning intellectual skills and using them to succeed in the society they live though they are being treated poorly by a race doesn’t mean they are all there to take them
