How did Canada's history of transportation have affected its development?
Canada's history of transportation has affected its development in many ways. In the 1700s and 1800s, canoes were the primary mode of transportation on Canada's lakes and rivers. Later on, canals were constructed. Railways have also been important in Canada. They were built to make profits for the railway builders, to unify the nation, and for defense reasons. Roads and highways later gave access to regions of Canada that had not been accessible by railways. Today, air transport makes it possible for Canadians to travel to any area of the nation, regardless of how remote it may be. In the future ways of transportation may be even more efficient due to advances in technology.

Later on, when railways were built, people got access to places they couldn't have reached on foot or by boats. Then came cars letting us build roads to new places open new areas to settlement. Now we have airplanes which can use to travel to far places and also remote areas.

The Government has an important role in transportation. Canada's federal government began the promotion of transportation more than 100 years ago when it encouraged the construction of railways. It promoted railway development through loans and grants. After the railways were built, the government had power over people who used their services. Governments then began to regulate the money charged by the railways to ensure a fair return to the transportation companies. They have controlled our ways of transportation to make sure things are running fairly.
