Expository Today, the average American eats 130 pounds of sugar a year. That’s enough to fill a bathtub, while in 1801 the average American only ate 8 pounds of sugar a year. Americans are consuming more sugar. Furthermore, candy is like poison because it can lead to many diseases like diabetes. Candy used to be very rare in American until Oliver Chase invented a machine that changed Americans lives in a big way. In other words, America’s idea about sweets has drastically changed in the past 100 years. Candy used to be an expensive luxury and thought to be nutritious, but today it is consumed more than ever. In the past, candy used to be a luxury that was only consumed by the wealthy. According to the text, “Back in the early 1800s candy was popular in Europe, but extremely expensive in America”.(pg.24) This shows that in the past candy was a luxury for Americans until Oliver Chase’s invention was created. His machine was able to mass produce candy making it more affordable to all people. In the text it states, “People bought lozenges hoping to relieve their sore throats, aching heads, and runny noses – though in truth, the lozenges didn’t work very well”.
