Carter Goodwin Woodson was born on December 19, 1875 and died on 1950. He had 6 other siblings. He was born in Virginia and grew up there. His father helped Union soldiers and his family was very poor and his father inspired him. Although his parents were illiterate but were very encouraging. At an early age he worked to help support his family. So he couldn’t go to school and that didn’t stop him, he taught himself. This is why he started high school late. He went to Fredrick Douglass High School. He was very smart and completed high school in two years. He went to three colleges, Berea College, University of Chicago and Harvard University. The way he created Black History Month was by making a special program for many people to join. At first it was only a week, now it is a month and it is known by the entire nation. He was a great writer and founded the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History in 1915. In 1916 in published the “Journal of Negro History” which was a very well-written and popular journal. He was a frontiersman in writing and publishing books/journals. He published a lot of books which helped lead to the Civil Rights Movement. He mainly wrote about the mis-education of an African-American. This related to his experiences with education since he did’t have a proper education when he was young. He also had a lot of educational titles and positions at colleges and universities across the nation. There is also an award called the “Carter G. Woodson Book Awards” today to honor his legacy and continue it. His lasting legacy was that he shaped what we now know as education through his books.
