In 1959, Fidel Castro lead a revolt, to overthrow the dictator, Fulgencio Batista. The U.S was cautious of Castro and watched his relationship with the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Before JFK was inaugurated he was informed of a plan to train exiles from Cuba to invade Cuba. The goal was to overthrow Cuban communist leader Fidel Castro. This started of the Bay of Pigs Invasion. The Bay of Pigs Invasion was approved by President Eisenhower in March 1960. Training camps were set up in Guatemala. By November, the CIA had trained a small army of 1,400 Cuban exiles. Cuban intelligence had gained knowledge of the training. In February 1961 President Kennedy authorized the invasion. The original plan was to air-strike the Cuban Bases. However, in the 1991 collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and its negative impact on Cuba's economy led Castro to relax some restrictions over time.
