A few weeks ago I went to the showing of a piece titled Braided Sorrow at the University of San Francisco Lone Mountain Theater. Braided Sorrow is a performance written by Marisela Orta, was directed by Roberto Varea and was presented by the USF Performing Arts Department. When I arrived to the performance the first thing that I noticed was the set up of the stage. It looked very different from usual. This past spring semester I was in a class taught by Professor Varea (The director of the play) and throughout the semester we were required to go to a number of performances.
The Fool's Errand was performed on April 17th, 2015, the first show on the last night of the Accademia dell'Arte grad lab presentations. This meant that when the audience arrived, the performance space was already set up for my show. The audience entered a quiet, dimly lit performance space surrounded by black curtains and facing a field of stars and the, as of yet unexplained, Moon Beam Lantern; glowing softly and suspended above. The house music was relatively low, though audible, and was made up of songs about the Moon and Fools. The sense of the space was dreamy and contemplative, like sitting outside on a summer evening watching the stars wheel overhead.
The productions of this play were successful through stage design, lighting crewing, and acting. Those three aspects made the quality of the play stand out to me, as an audience member. The production of the set design of the play was a good effort. The set design for the play staging aims for the sweet spot between feeding adult nostalgia and satisfying a new generation of children.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has become a household name throughout the entire world. Not only do people flock to see his shows, but the pure fact that people outside of the theatre world know the composer of certain musicals is an accomplishment in itself. He has changed the musical theatre world. Some call him a “Broadway master” because his musical Phantom of the Opera surpassed his own record for the musical Cats to now hold the record for the longest running musical on Broadway as well as London’s West End ( Snelson 1).

Savannah Live was a musical preformance held in one of the oldest continuing theater halls in the nation. The theater, appropiately named the Historic Savannah Theater, origionally opened in 1818, yet do to years of wear and tear and several fires, the modern theater was retrofitted to look like its 1940s, art-deco self. Although the stage was in the traditional Proscienim style, the play was anything but traditional. The stage hall itself seemed like something right out of the hay day of Broadway, with lights surrounding the procienian arch, red velvet chairs and carpet, the hall was like a time caplse bringing me back into the 20th centry. Mimicing the transformations of the hall throughout the years, the musical took the audience on a journey through musical, and theatrical history.
In Greco-Roman times, justice was seen as an action that could only be achieved using revenge. Today, though justice can be achieved in the same way, it is most commonly achieved by the use of laws or with the aid of the legal system. This is due to the fact that today, in order to ensure fairness between all people, there must be an established baseline that can be used to judge actions, that all people agree upon. This baseline is the laws, and the judgement is done by the jury, by using people to make the best decisions in accordance to what they feel is just. But the question that remains is what is justice, and how can it be portrayed between humans?
Upstage is back, downstage is front, right is left, left is right, out is up, break a leg but don't really, wings have nothing to do with birds, the catwalk doesn’t involve cats, and when the stage manager says move it means move. The theatre vocabulary is very confusing for the outside world, but for me it is my second language. Like most performances, “Kinky Boots” is highly educative and informative owing to the plot and storyline which have a different approach as opposed to most plays. As such, my choice to select “kinky Boots” as my performance of choice is influenced by the international acclaim the play has received from the time of its debut. Notably, the play has a variety of advantages owing to the level of experience of its writers, cast, and crew members. However, the show has managed to attract a large demographic because of its use of theatrics showcased in the performance. The response discusses my personal opinion of the play “Kinky Boots” which I attended in the Boston Opera House on the 11th of august.
This essay talks about the use of cinematography in the scene where the protagonist – Riggan Thomson enters a room and had a conversation with his daughter in the film Birdman. Birdman is set in New York City in a time where theatre shows were losing their significance in the entertainment industry. The film is about Riggan trying to salvage his career through a Broadway show while his ego portrayed as Birdman threatens to bring it all down. On top of the brilliant acting from the actors, Birdman was well known for its trademark illusion that it was filmed in a continuous, long tracking shot with no cuts. Throughout the series of time, the theatre has been an essential integral in human-being. It is through theatre that people gain a sense of understanding for different and relatable perspectives. For many individuals who are, or have been involved in theatre, it has nourished them with meaningful messages and morals. A well-known company called “ Bread and Puppet” is an old but prevalent theater in our society today. The Bread and Puppet Theater was founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann in Lower East Side of New York City (Bread and Puppet Theater).
It was fun making our own art before looking at real art. Than again, anything can be art. Walking into the art gallery felt like a total mood change. Upon walking into the gallery, it was quiet, the lighting had dimmed and all you heard was footwork. Theme dictates the placement of all artwork in the gallery.
