The civil war was a time in history that was tragic to all. Women’s rights were very limited to none. Women had no right to approach men. Women had no rights to vote. Women had no rights to own land. During this time period women literally had no rights at all. Men were forced to go into war. This was not just men who were older It was also young boys. Many wondered if the war would ever end lasting from 1861- 1856 (McPherson). Men and women were faced with challenges each day. Challenges of survival due to lack of knowledge. Inman and Ada in the novel Cold Mountain struggle to survive because of the limitations placed upon them by the ravages of the civil war and the dictates of social society. Charles Frazier spent long hours working on the Novel Cold Mountain. He was a man from Ashville North Carolina. Frazier grew up in the region of the Blue Ridge Mountains where cold mountains is located (Farnsworth). Frazier truly loves the mountains. Located western North Carolina there is a chapel that is actually related to the book Cold Mountain. Frazier’s great-great grandfather was a member of the Civil War. His great-great grandfather built the chapel, but he was sent into the civil war. Frazier’s grandfather was one of the few men who made it hone from the Civil War. His great-great grandfather was the minister of the chapel. In relations to love Frazier’s great-great grandfather seen a women sitting on the porch, and he said he was going to marry her. Ada did not know anything about life, and being able to live off of the land. It was almost as if her education was completely pointless. Being a girl during the civil war you had no rights to anything. It was not really her fought that she did not know anything about living off the land because she never had the option to learn how too. Ada was living day-to-day trying to survive off eggs that she would find every now and then. Often times Ada was having to battle off a rooster that kept attacking her. She was fortunate enough to have neighbors who did care about her. One-day Ada stopped by their house and they invited her to look down their well. When Ada looked down the well she seen a black figure walking and crow’s flying around. Ada is very shaken by the situation. The neighbors send a girl who lived off the land to help Ada. The girl they sent was a dark haired girl whose name was Ruby. Ruby had no education however, she was very good at living off the land. The first think ruby did when she got there was ring the roosters neck that had been attacking Ada and put it in a pot to be cooked.
