Francisco Franco was born on December 4, 1829 in Ferrol Spain. He graduated from the Toledo Military Academy in 1910 at the age of 18 and although he was physically small, he proved to be intelligent and courageous and got rapidly promoted. In 1917 he had already reached the rank of major and played a noticeable role in breaking strikes in the Austrian coal fields and because of that in 1920 Lieutenant Colonel Millan appointed him second in command of the Spanish Foreign Legion. In 1923 he already became the commander of the Spanish Legion, taking the place of Millan Astra and in 1926 he became the General of the Spanish National Army and was appointed to be Europe’s youngest general. He also was the leader of the Nationalist forces that overpowered the Spanish democratic republic in the Spanish Civil War. Overpowering the Spanish democratic republic made Francisco Franco leader of Spain and he led Spain into Monarchy, making himself the head of state with the power to choose his next successor. In 1936 he was appointed as “Generalissimo” of Spain and led revolts against the Spanish democratic republic and overpowered them. Once he overpowered them he led Spain into a monarchy with him being at the head of the state. This action made him gain the support and respect of Nazi Germany and of all the factions on the right side of Spain. Also in the years of 1936-1939, the world recognized Franco as the legitimate ruler of Spain. Becoming the ruler of Spain obviously made him richer, giving him a better lifestyle and gave him more power and respect.
