There have been a lot of characters who have ventured off into the world to find their purpose in life. John Mallon Waterman and Carl McCunn are just a few of the many who have taken part in this quest. Waterman was a mentally unstable hiker who died trying to hike the mountains of Denali. McCunn was another soulful explorer who photographed wildlife, but committed to himself that he would not be like the people that surround him on a daily basis. He would rather see through his decisions. McCandless set off into the Alaskan depths to test himself, to find himself, and to free himself from society’s values. In the article “Death of an Innocent,” author Jon Krakauer describes him donating his Oxford Famine Relief Fund and leaving society behind without informing anyone. As the author, Jon Krakauer, mentions, “Chris McCandless intended to invent a new life for himself, one in which he would be free to wallow in unfiltered experience.” Through the words “to wallow in unfiltered experience,” Krakauer is describing how nature does not come with safety nets, security, familiarity or comfort. It is a place where there are no laws or rules. Nature is the only place where Chris could gain a full view of life and live with the forces of nature, in a place where experience comes in only one form: raw and unfiltered. In “Into The Wild,” McCandless read the book “Family Happiness” by Leo Tolstoy. He reads, “If we admit that human life can be ruled by reason, then all possibility of life is destroyed.” If the only ideas society considers sensible are rational and full of reason, than so many ideas would have to be turned down or rejected due to their impracticality. These ideas could have possibly brought change and advancement to the world. A person who listens to society’s ethics will never know what the outcome of their idea will be. When life is ruled by reason and rationality, ideas become obsolete and nothing will ever happen.
