Additionally, Christopher Columbus enslaved and mistreated the natives. Not only did Christopher Columbus change the culture of the natives but actually tortured them. Columbus used the natives for his own use. “Throughout his years in the Americas, Columbus forced natives to work for the sake of profits. Later, he sent thousands of Taino “Indians” to Spain to be sold, and many of them died during the journey.”
Looking back at the interactions between Christopher Columbus and the Natives, in today’s time we could classify this as genocide. The actions of Columbus were outright nauseating. Authors often leave out all of the bloodshed that was a result of his brutal journey. Columbus nearly destroyed an entire population along with its culture, tradition, and religion. Columbus did anything in his power to find gold for personal gain and for the Queen and King destroying anything in his way.
For many years, people have debated over whether Christopher Columbus is a hero or a villain. Based on background research I have done, Columbus, to me, has proven to be a villain. Columbus forced the Indigenous people of America (Native Americans) to change their religion. He put them into slavery and abused them. They were also infected by the diseases that the Spaniards were immune to.
(Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History) Some of them were raped in Spain. Then the natives fought back and Columbus and his men killed and cannibalized them. When it was Columbus’ duty to ensure their safety, he was the one who removed them from their home. One of his other major bad actions was enslaving the Taino people in Hispaniola.
During the time period of which Columbus first set foot on the new world, peoples views on slavery were much different than ours today. They made exceptions to it as everyone owned slaves back them (Document 2). However, physical abuse and torture are no exception. Columbus has been exposed for his torture on the Taino tribe.
