Calder Smith Ms. Gommermann Honors English 10 06 May 2024 Christopher Columbus Throughout the fabric of time and history, not many figures top the impact of Christopher Columbus. Whose impact forever altered human civilization after his voyages in the late 15th century? As an Italian, Columbus knew the audacious efforts of European countries competing for the riches to the east. Ties to these efforts led the Italian to propose sailing westward in a more imaginative effort to get these same riches. By doing so, Columbus bridged continents unaware of each other's existence. Here he met a chief who was willing to trade gold for European goods, however Columbus’s first voyage never proved to hold as much wealth as he had imagined. This proved to be a big problem for Columbus as he felt as though returning to Spain with only the sense of a new place would not be as rewarding to the Spanish royalty as he would have hoped. It is also worth noting that at this point Columbus was still oblivious to the fact that he had bridged contact with a different continent other than Asia. Despite this fact, he still found it useful to create a new settlement here named La Navidad, the location at which Columbus’s second voyage aimed its efforts to return.
